Labour Market Test (LMT) β A Detailed Guide for AEWV Employers in New Zealand
The Labour Market Test (LMT) is a key step for New Zealand employers who wish to hire migrant workers under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). This process helps ensure that employers are genuinely unable to find suitable New Zealanders before looking overseas.
π What is the Labour Market Test?
The LMT is used to demonstrate that no New Zealand citizens or residents are available for the job being offered to a migrant. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) uses this information to determine whether itβs necessary to bring in overseas talent.
When Is the Labour Market Test Required?
- The job is not listed on the Green List, or
- The salary is below twice the median wage (currently NZD $29.66/hour in 2025)
If the job is on the Green List or pays twice the median wage, the LMT may be waived.
π What Is Required for the Labour Market Test?
To pass the LMT, you must:
- Advertise the job in New Zealand for at least 14 calendar days.
- Use widely-used platforms (e.g., Seek, Trade Me Jobs, Indeed).
- Include in the ad:
- Job title and location
- Key tasks and responsibilities
- Required qualifications or experience
- Hours of work and employment type
- Pay range (must meet or exceed the median wage)
- Application instructions
- Genuinely assess New Zealand applicants.
- Justify why any applicants were unsuitable.
π Documents Needed
When submitting your Job Check, include:
- Screenshot or PDF of the job ad
- Dates the ad was live
- Applicant summary and reasons for rejection
- Recruitment agency details (if applicable)
- Salary evidence
π° Cost and Processing Time
- Job Check Fee: NZD $610
- Processing Time: Approximately 10 working days
π’ After the LMT
If Immigration New Zealand is satisfied that no suitable New Zealanders are available and all other requirements are met, your Job Check will be approved. You can then invite your candidate to apply for their AEWV.
